FAD e.V. was founded on July 14, 2000. The members are well-known companies in the engine and vehicle industry, research and development facilities, manufacturers and users of exhaust gas aftertreatment systems as well as companies in the test and measurement technology sector.
The aim of the association is to promote research and development in the field of exhaust gas aftertreatment technologies for internal combustion engines.
The main pillars of FAD e.V.’s activities are the implementation of research and development projects, the transfer of knowledge and the promotion of young talent, technology advice and technology transfer, as well as technology assessment and certification.

The Main Tasks of FAD e.V.
The main purpose of the FAD is the promotion of science and research in the field of exhaust aftertreatment technologies for combustion engines. The FAD focuses its main efforts on supporting its members and partners in the fields: development, assessment, application and launch of exhaust aftertreatment systems, to obtain an effective decrease in exhaust emissions of diesel engines.
Furthermore the central task of the FAD is to support the exchange of experiences between members, the realization of research and development projects and to establish a database for all interested user.
With workshops and conferences the FAD contributes considerably to the promotion of exhaust after-treatment technologies and dissemination of environmental information.

Another aim of the FAD is the evaluation and sustainable quality assurance of exhaust aftertreatment systems, especially for the after-market. Due to his the FAD started immediately after its foundation with the development of test criteria. These test criteria are to control the functionality of exhaust aftertreatment systems and components with consideration of specific application conditions.
Several projects and studies laid the basis for the objective and wholistic evaluation of exhaust aftertreatment systems. By means of these scientific findings and the broad practical experiences of the members in manufacturing and application, evaluation and test criteria for exhaust aftertreatment systems that consider the specific application were developed. Resulting from this long year work the FAD-Quality Seal for exhaust aftertreatment technologies was developed.
An important part of the FAD activities are the promotion of academic education. The association allocates diploma theses and traineeships to students under and in connection with FAD research projects. Members of the FAD support with lectures and technical presentations the practice-oriented education at the HTW Dresden.
The emphases of research
The focus of work is the promotion of research, especially fundamental research in the field of exhaust aftertreatment and the realization of own projects. These projects are congenial to fundamental and applied research.
- Systems and components of exhaust aftertreatment for diesel emissions
- Evaluation criteria and test criteria for exhaust aftertreatment systems
- Quality requirements and quality assurance for exhaust aftertreatment systems and components
- Emission measurement- and analysis methods
- Alternative fuels and additives
- New concepts of combustion engines with integrated aftertreatment systems
- Danger potential of secondary emissions
- Maintenance of systems
